- I have an A4000 with 2 IDE hard drives and a wierd problem. My hard disks are
- the original 200 meg Segate, and a Maxtor 1260 meg. Everything this way works
- fine. I decided the Segate was dreadfully slow, and decided to replace it
- with a 540 meg maxtor. The maxtor had until now been used in my Pentium so I
- know that it is good. So I temporarily pull the 1260, install the 540. I
- format and partition the 540 along the same lines as the 200. One Workbench
- partition, and one Work partition. I matched every relevant setting between
- the Hard Drives except of course size. I made Workbench 32 meg, and devoted
- everything else to Work. Everything went fine. I copied everything from the
- 200 to the 540 using workbench drag and drop. So far so good. Next I remove
- the 200 and put in the 1260, as well as re jumpering the 540 to be the master.
- I switch the system on and the machine asks for a floppy. It seems the 540
- doesn't spin up fast enough for the amiga. So I [CTRL]-[AMIGA]-[AMIGA] and
- the system boots up fine. Now comes the wierd part. Everything on the
- Workbench partition seems fine. but over half of the programs on the Work
- partition dont run. The error is Unable to Open Tool XXXXXXX or something
- like that. After I try running a number of these programs that dont work, the
- Hard Disk light goes on and stays on, and Workbench stops responding to
- me. I wasn't sure what to make of this, so I switched drives around again,
- and repartitioned reformated and recopied both partitions. Switched back --
- same problem. Next I went back to the original drive config. Copied all the
- files from the 200 to the 1260, removed the 200 replaced it with the 540, boot
- up, copied just one program from 1260 to 540 and tested. The program ran fine
- from the 1260 but not from the 540. I am completley at a loss to explain
- this, I anyone has any ideas please email me at gxa114@cac.psu.edu or
- gxa114@psu.edu. Thanks
